🎭 How the Scam Actually Works
It starts with a fake emergency — a full-screen web pop-up, a loud beeping sound, or an out-of-the-blue phone call claiming to be Microsoft, Apple, or your bank.
The playbook is always the same:
- Scare you with a “virus” that isn't real
- Get you to call a number or click “chat”
- Talk you into installing remote-access software
- Demand payment in gift cards, wire, or crypto
No malware ever ran. The only thing they need to hack is you.
🚩 Red Flags Real Companies Never Do
Legitimate tech companies do not cold-call you, and a virus warning never comes with a phone number. Hang up or close the window if you see any of these:
- “Your computer is infected — call now”
- Pressure and a countdown timer
- A request to “remote in” to your PC
- Payment by gift card, wire, or Bitcoin
- Asking for your password or bank login
When in doubt, stop and ask someone you trust before you click or call.
