MY WEB GUY SAYS I NEED
“CLOUDFLARE.” I DON'T EVEN
KNOW WHAT THAT IS — AND
IT SOUNDS EXPENSIVE.
PANEL 2 — THE PATRIOT KID ARRIVES
🥷☁️
THE PATRIOT KID ARRIVES
IT'S A MIDDLEMAN THAT SITS
BETWEEN VISITORS AND YOUR
SITE. AND THE PART YOU
NEED IS FREE.
PANEL 3 — WITHOUT THE MIDDLEMAN
🌐➡️🏢
Every visitor hits your one server:
Customer in Pensacola: fast
Customer in Seattle: slow
Bot hammering /login: gets through
Server busy: site down
PANEL 4 — WHAT IT ACTUALLY DOES
🛡️⚡︎
THREE JOBS,
ONE MIDDLEMAN.
The phonebook (DNS) — turns your
name into an address.
The copy shop (CDN) — keeps copies
near your visitors.
The bouncer (WAF) — blocks the
junk before it reaches you.
PANEL 5 — THE HONEST BIT
⚖️
IT'S NOT MAGIC:
It can't fix a slow, bloated site — only
deliver it faster.
It's another account someone must own.
Set up wrong, it caches the wrong thing
and you get yesterday's page.
PANEL 6 — FAST EVERYWHERE
🎉⚡︎🔒
SEATTLE LOADS AS FAST AS
PENSACOLA NOW — AND THE
BOTS STOPPED HAMMERING
MY LOGIN PAGE!
🥷
And it costs nothing.

your site is set up?

☁️ What Cloudflare Actually Is

Normally a visitor's browser looks up your address and connects straight to your server. Cloudflare sits in the middle: visitors reach them first, and they pass the request on to you. That one change is what makes the rest possible.

Three jobs in plain English:

  • DNS — the phonebook. Turns yourbusiness.com into the number your server actually lives at.
  • CDN — the copy shop. Keeps copies of your images and pages in cities around the world, so they come from nearby instead of crossing the country.
  • WAF — the bouncer. Filters out bots, brute-force login attempts, and floods of fake traffic before they ever touch your server.

It also gives you a free HTTPS certificate, which is the padlock in the address bar.

🛡️ The Others, and What They're For

Cloudflare is the best-known but not the only one. What matters is which job you're buying:

  • Cloudflare, Fastly, Akamai — the middleman: speed, protection, DNS.
  • GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domainsregistrars. They rent you the name. Not the same thing.
  • Azure, AWS, DigitalOceanhosting. Where the site actually runs.

Plenty of small businesses pay three companies for jobs they think are one. Knowing which is which is how you stop paying twice — and how you know who to call when something breaks.

⚖️ When It Helps — and When It Doesn't

Worth doing if you get visitors from outside your area, you've been hit by bots or spam form submissions, or you're still on plain HTTP. The free plan covers all of that.

It won't rescue a site that's slow because it's badly built — delivering a heavy page faster still leaves you a heavy page. And configured carelessly it caches pages it shouldn't, so you update your prices and customers keep seeing the old ones for a day.
